In the 23rd century, claw-handed mutants begin to overrun Earth, killing everyone in their way. According to an ancient religious scripture the creatures are born from an underground transmutation machine that must be destroyed in order to save mankind. A group of battle-hardy warriors are sent out to kick some butt…
The Mutant Chronicles kicks off with sequences of mass carnage and doesn’t let up until its final, breathtaking moment. Smartly mixing CGI with practical effects and boasting the sort of non-stop, edge-of-your-seat pace that the genre has not seen since Aliens, British director Simon Hunter (who hasn’t made a film since 2000’s underwhelming Lighthouse) may have crafted the sleeper hit of the year.
Perhaps most importantly, the picture’s titular mutants are exactly what big screen monsters should be – snarling, gruesome, pee-your-pants terrifying abominations that slice and dice more torsos in the space of one movie than Jason and Freddy combined. Indeed, not since the hordes of the aforementioned Aliens have sci-fi frighteners seemed quite so menacing.
The result is a bunch of heroes that you actually want to cheer, led by Thomas Jane in a role that is sure to make him a household name. Asked if he believes in any higher power, the former Punisher star spouts the best sign-off line since Roddy Piper in They Live: “I’m not paid to have faith. I’m paid to f*** things up.”
And to think John Carpenter himself turned down the chance to direct this instant classic. Calum Waddell
VERDICT: 9/10
See The Mutant Chronicles and witness a sci-fi franchise in the making. It really is that good…
No bez jaj, trudno mi w to uwierzyć
Dla nas pewnie -2/3 punkty za brak zgodności z "realiami", ale to i tak nieźle.
